Court Lane Allotments Autumn Fair 2013 ~ Sunday 22nd September 11-3

Our annual Autumn Fair is on Sunday 22nd September 2013 and will be open from 11am to 3pm. The fair is now in its fourth year and grows from year to year.

A popular attraction is the Food and Drinks marquee. Step inside to find a fantastic selection of homemade cakes and savouries. You will also have a chance to shop at our other fabulous stalls, including:

You can also admire our range of Heaviest & Longest produce in the Court Lane Vegetable Show, wander around and see the Tallest Sunflower and you can even vote for your favourite Scarecrow on the allotments.

Outside, Meet the Chickens and buy local free range eggs. See live Honeybees inside our bee observation hive. Court Lane Honey will be for sale too, but “bee” quick…..it always sells out fast!

Our very own MEGAN RICKARDS, a member of the West Midlands Fire Service Pipe Band, has recently been crowned the Ladies All-England Amateur Piping Champion 2013.

Birmingham Annual Gardening Show ~ Saturday 31st August & Sunday 1st September 2013

A quick update to remind everyone that the Birmingham Annual Gardening Show takes place this weekend 31st August/1st September 2013 at Bordesley Green Allotments, directly off Bordesley Green Road, B9 5PD from 10 am to 5 pm.

Entry and parking are free. Bus 97 passes the entrance, and 11 and 28 stop nearby.

3 of our own plot holders will be presented with prizes for 1st place in the Best Plot, and 1st and 3rd places in the Best Newcomer competitions. Prizegiving starts at 3pm on Sunday.

Please go along and enjoy the allotment displays from sites all over Birmingham. There will be bees to see, plants to buy and refreshments all day.

Court Lane Allotments’ Barn Dance – Saturday 24th August 2013

Get your dancing feet on as you mosey on down to our Barn Dance on Saturday 24th August at 8pm. There will be a live band, Fiddler’s Elbow playing as you do-si-do the evening away.

Feel free to bring your own picnic and drinks. Tickets available at Court Lane Allotments Shop at weekends or telephone for more details. See flyer below for contact information. Tickets are £6 for adults and £4 for under 16s.

Court Lane Allotments’ Charity Fun Dog Show ~ Sunday 21st July 11-3

Back by popular demand is our Charity Fun Dog Show. This year it is to be held on Sunday 21st July. Gates open 10am and judging is from 11am. Classes cost £1 each to enter and the schedule is below.

There will be a range of stalls and, of course, refreshments.

As a responsible pet owner please use poop-scoop bags for any mess. Dogs must also be on a lead at all times.

Spring Fair and Great Court Lane Cake Off ~ Sunday 19th May 11-3

Court Lane Allotments are pleased to announce there will be a special event at our Spring Fair on Sunday 19th May 11-3

We have invited our special guest, Brendan Lynch, finalist in the Great British Bake Off to judge a homemade cake competition. This is a fun competition and your only limitation is your imagination. Cakes can be any size/shape/style/flavour. One entry per person only. Entry is FREE. Cakes must be submitted on the day between 11am and 12noon. Judging will take place at 2pm. 1st prize will be a signed Great British Bake Off book.

Court Lane Allotments to take part in the Big Dig 16th March 2013 ~ Volunteers needed

Court Lane Allotments has been accepted to participate in the Big Dig Birmingham project on Saturday 16th March 2013, 11am to 3pm. This is part of a national initiative to connect local communities with gardening projects in their area.

We are an urban allotment site in Erdington. We have 105 allotment plots, a recently-developed community garden with resident honey bees, and a thriving sociable community of allotmenteers.

Whats happening:

We are having an open day on to carry out essential maintenance of the Community Garden area and plant additional fruiting bushes along the perimeter of the site. Volunteers should bring spades and gardening gloves and a willingness to dig!

When: 16/03/2013  Time: We are open to the public 11am to 3pm. We also have an on-site gardening shop for essential tools, seeds, compost etc.
Where: Court Lane (Junction with Jarvis Road) Erdington B23 5RN
How to get there: We are a 10 minute walk from Erdington railway station. Several buses pass right by the entrance on Court Lane. There is on-site parking for cars.

VOLUNTEERS WHO FILL OUT A REWARD CARD OF VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES WILL BE ENTERED INTO A PRIZE DRAW!

Hedgehogs and Bonfires

It is approaching bonfire season and there is nothing quite like standing in front of a well controlled fire on a chilly evening. But could you please spare a thought for our bristly friend, the hedgehog. According to a recent survey, there has been a 25% decline in British hedgehogs in the last ten years. These animals are a gardener’s friend as they eat a lot of pests including slugs so it’s important to encourage and ensure their safety.

Below is a poster that points out the importance of checking for any hibernating hedgehogs in any potential bonfires. Ideally, any woodpile that you are thinking of burning, should be moved to another location, but if that is not possible then check for any sleeping hedgehogs.
