Hedgehogs and Bonfires

It is approaching bonfire season and there is nothing quite like standing in front of a well controlled fire on a chilly evening. But could you please spare a thought for our bristly friend, the hedgehog. According to a recent survey, there has been a 25% decline in British hedgehogs in the last ten years. These animals are a gardener’s friend as they eat a lot of pests including slugs so it’s important to encourage and ensure their safety.

Below is a poster that points out the importance of checking for any hibernating hedgehogs in any potential bonfires. Ideally, any woodpile that you are thinking of burning, should be moved to another location, but if that is not possible then check for any sleeping hedgehogs. If you require any further information on hedgehogs then go to British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
